The Story
The trilogy that put New Zealand on the global cinematic map and turned the entire country into Middle-earth. Based on J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy masterpiece, it follows Frodo Baggins on his quest to destroy the One Ring, alongside Sam, Gandalf, Aragorn, and the rest of the Fellowship. The final film, The Return of the King, won all 11 Academy Awards it was nominated for — including Best Picture — a clean sweep that ties the all-time record held by only two other films, Ben-Hur and Titanic.

Why Here
Location scouts spotted the Alexander family's 1,250-acre sheep and beef farm from the air in 1998 and knew instantly it matched Tolkien's Shire. The production spent nine months transforming the working farm, including real flowers and vegetables planted in the hobbit hole gardens. The New Zealand Army helped build a 1.5km access road and level the site, reimbursed for their work with small roles as extras in the battle scenes. Look closely on the tour and you'll notice the hobbit holes aren't all the same size — some are built at roughly 60% scale, others closer to 90%, a forced-perspective trick that let a normal-sized Gandalf tower over the hobbits without any digital effects at all. None of the interiors you see on screen were filmed here, though — every indoor scene, from Bag End's pantry to the Green Dragon's taproom, was built as a full-scale soundstage set in Wellington.
