The Story

Behind the Lens
Martin Campbell (the Kiwi director behind GoldenEye and Casino Royale). Campbell built the production around real mountaineering expertise brought in to advise on the technical sequences.
Why NZ?
While the movie is set on the lethal slopes of the Himalayas, the actual filming took place on the breathtaking, accessible peaks of Aoraki / Mount Cook. New Zealand's alpine base camps provided the ultimate, treacherous visual terrain for the production. Unlike many mountain films that lean on green screen, this production committed to shooting on real, serious alpine terrain. Very few productions commit to shooting on real alpine terrain at this level of difficulty and risk.
On Set
Chris O'Donnell's daughter was born in Christchurch during the production — he has said he actually fainted during the birth, a story that became a well-known piece of shoot folklore among the cast and crew. The commitment to real terrain shaped the finished film's tone considerably.
Legacy
A commercial success on release, the film's climbing sequences were shot with real mountaineering consultants involved to keep the technical detail credible.
