The Story

A heartwarming, beautifully realized post-apocalyptic fairytale based on the DC comic book series. Ten years after "The Great Crumble" ravaged the world, a lovable ten-year-old deer-hybrid boy leaves his forest sanctuary to search for his mother.

The Stars

Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie, and narrated by James Brolin. This young cast anchors a story built around forests and mountain ranges spanning much of the country.

Behind the Lens

Produced by Susan and Robert Downey Jr. Mickle adapted Jeff Lemire's comic series for television with Robert Downey Jr. serving as a producer.

Why NZ?

New Zealand's pristine forests and sweeping mountain ranges provided the ultimate "nature-reclaiming-the-earth" aesthetic. Filming spanned across the country, from the lush foliage of the Waitākere Ranges to the dramatic alpine backdrops of the Southern Alps. Very few countries can offer both dense native forest and dramatic alpine terrain within a single production's travel radius. The show's reliance on real forest and mountain scenery gave its fairy-tale tone a genuinely lived-in quality.

On Set

Christian Convery has said the New Zealand shoot genuinely helped him connect with playing a half-animal character surrounded by real forest rather than a soundstage. Co-star Nonso Anozie was visibly moved when the crew learned and performed a haka for his birthday during production. The finished look leaned almost entirely on what was already there, rather than digital additions.

Legacy

Based on Jeff Lemire's DC/Vertigo comic series of the same name, the show ran for three seasons on Netflix.
