Why NZ?
New Zealand's dramatic Southern Alps played host to the film's nail-biting, helicopter-chase finale. The production built a massive set in the remote Rees Valley near Glenorchy, utilizing the country's world-class helicopter pilots and vast airspace for Cruise's death-defying aerial stunts. The scale of the build reflects just how far international productions are willing to go to use New Zealand's genuine alpine terrain rather than a digital substitute. Very few countries could offer this combination of scale, airspace, and skilled aviation crew for a single sequence.
On Set
Henry Cavill has described being partially deafened by his own headset while flying a helicopter within a rotor's length of Tom Cruise's aircraft above a New Zealand cliff face for the film's climactic sequence — a stunt performed for real, not on a soundstage.
