The Story
A lavish, action-packed fantasy series based on Terry Goodkind's popular Sword of Truth novels. It follows a humble woodsman who discovers he is a fated hero destined to wield a magical sword and defeat a ruthless, magical tyrant.
The Stars
Craig Horner, Bridget Regan, and Bruce Spence. This cast carried the fantasy series across its two-season run, largely filmed around greater Auckland.
Behind the Lens
Developed by Sam Raimi and shot by Kiwi crew veterans. The series was produced by the same team behind Hercules and Xena, continuing their long-running New Zealand production base.
Why NZ?
The fantasy world required vast, magical forests, medieval villages, and dramatic cliffs. The production utilized beautiful locations all around the Auckland region, including the rolling hills of Kumeu and the scenic Henderson Valley. The rolling countryside required almost no digital alteration to read as a believable fantasy realm. The show's reliance on real countryside over digital backdrops gave it a grounded, tactile quality across both seasons.
On Set
Craig Horner has joked about "losing" his Australian accent the longer the shoot went on. Bridget Regan adopted a New Zealand cat during filming, naming him Henry. The rest of the cast reportedly pranked co-star Bruce Spence by catching him watching Dirty Dancing alone in his trailer between takes. The countryside did most of the visual storytelling long before any effects work was added.
Legacy
Based on Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth novels, the series ran for two seasons in first-run syndication before concluding.
